![]() The song has been recorded or referenced by: The Viscounts' record was in turn covered by comedians Morecambe and Wise, with the same melody and modified lyrics ("We put the Bomp in the.") the record was titled "We're the Guys (Who Drive Your Baby Wild)".Ī newer version, by Showaddywaddy, charted at #37 in August 1982. Mann's version did not chart in the UK, though a cover version by the Viscounts reached #21 there in September 1961. The single debuted on Billboard's Hot 100 on August 7, 1961, and remained for twelve weeks, peaking at #7. This is accentuated by the fact that Mann is a songwriter singing about songwriters. It fits into the category of "self-referential" songs, in that it is a song about the genre it belongs to, in this case doo-wop. The song inspired the title of an eponymous music magazine. Mann was backed up by the Halos, a doo-wop group of its own renown that had a single top-40 hit with "Nag" and also sang on Curtis Lee's hit " Pretty Little Angel Eyes." ![]() "Boogidy shoo" can be found in the lyrics to " Pony Time" by Chubby Checker, released earlier that year. The spoken section is a reference to the song " Little Darlin'" by the Diamonds. ![]() In this song, Mann sings about the frequent use of nonsense lyrics in doo-wop music, and how his girl fell in love with him after listening to several such songs.Įxamples of the type of song referred to include the Marcels' version of " Blue Moon" (in which they sing "Bomp bomp ba bomp, ba bomp ba bomp bomp" and "dip-de-dip-de-dip") and The Edsels' "Rama-Lama-Ding-Dong", both of which charted earlier the same year. It was originally released as a single on the ABC-Paramount label (10237). " Who Put the Bomp (in the Bomp, Bomp, Bomp)" is a doo-wop style novelty song from 1961 by the American songwriter Barry Mann, who wrote it with Gerry Goffin.

![]() Plus what difference would turns and wiggles make if you can’t actually get off there? Straight lines are the easiest to process. Could perhaps be simplified a little further in parts. When you ride transit you typically know where you want to go and are looking at maps to see how to get there, not how many turns there are along the way. Our rating: A great effort from Alec here – a very clean modernist look that works really well for the most part. Atlanta natives might know what “The Perimeter” is, but tourists and visitors almost certainly don’t! The tiny, spindly white label on a light grey background is also quite difficult to read. Likewise, I think Alec needs to append “I-285” to the label for the framing ring road. I’m not entirely sold by Alec’s naming of the lines, which seems potentially confusing to me: an announcement like “This is a Doraville Line train to the Airport” seems almost certain to cause panic among those unfamiliar with the system. A little further exploration of symbols to come up with something more immediately and obviously different could be good. With only four clearly-labelled lines, this isn’t a huge issue for Atlanta, but it’s nice to see that it’s been a design consideration for Alec.Īlec’s solution to the different service patterns is in line with the minimalist principles of the map (white dot = full time service, white hollow dot = daytime service, white hollow diamond = daytime service on weekdays only), although the diamond is perhaps visually a little too similar to the hollow circle on first glance. Finally - as Alec says - the colours do work better for colour-blind users, as seen below in comparison to the official map (left). The yellow then belongs to the line that gets cut back to serve as a shuttle in the evenings, similar to the treatment of the lighter blue line along the east-west trunk. If anything, it might be good to swap the orange and yellow line colours, just to give the stronger colour to the line that has service along its full length at all times. The two warm colours share a trunk line, as do the two colder colours. I like Alec’s reworking of the line colours, both because it brings them in line with MARTA’s branding (as he notes), but it also makes the service relationships between the pairs of lines more obvious. ![]() With a simplified diagram like this that obviously draws influence from his work, it’s good to ask, “What would Massimo Vignelli have done here?” - the answer would almost always be to simplify down to the absolute barest of elements. Without having to show the relationship of those stations to Atlanta’s highway network like the official map does, I feel that this whole section could just be straightened out. There are a few elements that are at odds with that simplicity, like the attempt to show the actual routing of the Atlanta Streetcar and the overly fussy right-angled bends that the northern end of the Orange Line takes past Medical Center. There’s a lot to like in Alec’s reworking of Atlanta’s rapid rail transit network - a minimalist look with really nice typography, definitely evoking a very mid-century design feel. I’ve named the lines after their unique terminals, which erases the potential confusion for tourists or first-time riders of which branch goes where. For this map, I’ve “rebranded” the line colors, which has the added benefit of making them easier to distinguish for those with colorblindness. I’ve always been puzzled as to why the colors in MARTA’s logo don’t reflect those of the lines. Long-time reader here with my first submission, a redesign of Atlanta’s MARTA rail system. As Miranda and Amelia said, sometimes the skin gets rubbery from it and the tattoo could take longer.” Peach - “What are your thoughts on numbing cream for tattoos, Ashley?”Īshley - “I'll work on people who use numbing cream, but would like for them to give me a heads up if they plan to use it. Lastly, I spoke with Ashley Horncastle, a neo-traditional artist with over 10 years experience who does a lot of coverups and reworks of tattoos Miranda and Amelia both agreed with this point and also said that once the pain hits, the clients generally tap out sooner as it's too much pain all at once. Justina - “When the numbing cream wears off it can be pretty shocking for the client as their body hasn’t built up that good endorphins release.” She’s been tattooing for over 20 years so I wondered if she would have anything else to add to this topic? ![]() I asked shop owner Justina Kervel her thoughts on numbing cream. Peach - “ If and when you do use numbing cream, do you have one you suggest?”Īmelia - “Zensa and Dr Numb are the same formula, I use them in cosmetic tattooing only as they alter the skin.” This comprises the skin and makes it an alien texture which is hard to ensure the safety and the outcome for the client.” ![]() Numbing cream is a vasoconstrictor ( the narrowing of blood vessels by small muscles in their walls) and depletes blood cells to the area. If they insist on using numbing cream, in some cases I won’t offer a free touch up. For “regular” tattoo clients, I will ask them not to use numbing cream as it compromises the tattoo. Peach - “Will you use numbing cream for your tattooing process, Amelia?”Īmelia - “For cosmetic tattoo clients, the benefits outweigh the cons. Next I spoke to Amelia Vogan, who has been working in the cosmetic tattoo industry since 2015 and in the last year began tattooing full time. I would only use it on a case by case basis for clients with very sensitive scarring or other issues, and we would have to have a conversation about it prior to their appointment.” The tissue becomes more difficult to saturate.Īnother con on numbing cream is it takes longer to tattoo the person which, in my opinion, negates the purpose of the numbing cream. It also makes it harder to push ink between those skin cells. This constricts the cells making it harder for the lidocaine to flow out of the area. Numbing cream usually uses epinephrine (most commonly known as adrenaline) or a similar ingredient to keep the lidocaine (the active numbing ingredient), localized. ![]() Miranda - “In 98% of cases I would not use it. ![]() But I hear you don't love using it on clients. You’ve booked a tattoo appointment, once the adrenaline finally settles down you think, what about the pain? Am I going to be able to sit through this? Then a light bulb moment. After the victory over the Cicones, Odysseus wisely wants to take the plunder and depart quickly (9.50). The most notable example being his difficulty in controlling his men. In other ways, however, he seems slow to learn. His self-control while dealing with the suitors' insults is exemplary and contrasts, for example, with his earlier irresistible urge to announce his name to the Cyclops in Book 9. As Menelaus tells Telemachus in Book 4, it was Odysseus' legendary ruse of the Trojan horse that led to the defeat of Troy.Ĭertainly Odysseus does grow in wisdom and judgment throughout his ventures. It was he who disguised himself as an old beggar and infiltrated the enemy. His participation in the war was crucial to the Greeks' victory. ![]() When Odysseus left for Troy, he had already established his reputation as a hero. The Odyssey is not a lesson plan for growth the episodes are not didactic examples of the importance of prudence or anything else. While he does seem to grow throughout his wanderings, the reader should not look at each event as a one more learning experience for the hero. He is, in every way, "the man of twists and turns" (1.1). During the battle with the suitors, for example, she could easily and quickly prevail but she makes Odysseus earn the victory.Īppropriately, Odysseus' development as a character is complicated. ![]() Even when Athena intervenes on his behalf, she often leaves ultimate success or failure up to Odysseus. Odysseus often has only two choices: death or victory. In Homer's world, where there are no police or justice systems, might usually makes right. His concern with victory is also cultural, as well as practical. He wants to return home and live well in Ithaca as a result, every step along the way is another test, sometimes, another battle. It is easy to see why some critics like to call him the first "modern man." He is deeper than Achilles, more contemplative, but still capable of explosive violence he is almost certainly more interesting. He creates his own code of conduct through his adventures. Odysseus can be merciful, as when he spares the bard Phemius, or brutal, as he seems when dealing with the dozen disloyal maidservants. He is willing to pay a price for knowledge for example, he insists on hearing the Sirens' call, even though to do so, he must have himself excruciatingly strapped to the mast of his ship so that he cannot give in to the temptation. Although he is self-disciplined (refusing to eat the lotus), his curiosity is sometimes the root of his trouble (as with the Cyclops). ![]() When it proves effective, Odysseus lies (even to his own family), cheats, or steals in ways that we would not expect in an epic hero. Often he openly evaluates a situation, demonstrating the logic he employs in making his choices. He lives by his wiles as well as his courage. Odysseus, in The Odyssey, is much more complicated. Achilles, of course, chose the glorious life therefore, he achieves a kind of immortality through valor and intense, honest devotion to a cause. According to the myth the Homeric Greeks would have known, Achilles was given a choice by the gods to live a short, glorious life full of excitement and heroism or a long, tranquil life with little recognition or fame. He has a tragic flaw, which can best be identified as hubris (an overbearing arrogance or misguided pride) as one of several distinguishing traits. We can contrast Odysseus, for example, with the great warrior Achilles in The Iliad.Īchilles himself is not a two-dimensional stereotype. He is also a living series of contradictions, a much more complicated character than we would expect to find in the stereotypical epic hero. He is confident that he represents virtue even when a modern audience might not be so sure. Even the wrath of Poseidon does not keep him from his homecoming. He is favored by the gods and respected and admired by the mortals. Odysseus is a combination of the self-made, self-assured man and the embodiment of the standards and mores of his culture. ![]() Last fall, voters in Los Angeles County approved Measure M, a sales tax meant to pay for projects that will ease traffic congestion, including expanding public transportation. The study is the latest attempt to quantify the problem of traffic congestion by Inrix, which collects anonymous data from vehicle navigation systems, GPS systems and smartphones. ![]() The study looked at major cities’ traffic hotspots - defined as areas with repeated traffic jams - and ranked them according to the duration, length and frequency of those traffic jams. I believe it was a miracle that I actually received my belongings. The most egregious wrongdoing is that the salesperson on the phone promised and ASSURED me that my quoted price was the total for my move, which was a barefaced lie.I specifically said, and I quote: "$1628.00, that's the total price for the whole move, and there are no extra charges after that?"To which the salesperson (****************) reassured me that this was indeed the ******* price of the move.I wish I could obtain a recording of that call. **************** is non-existent after the initial sales call. Their quoted "total price" became an "estimate" after I signed the contract. |
